Dash Cam Buying: Resolution, Parking Mode and Why Storage Fails

Dash cams are sold on resolution, which is the wrong headline. A 4K camera that cannot read a number plate at night, or whose memory card silently stopped recording three months ago, is worse than a 1080p camera that works. Here is what actually determines whether you have usable footage on the day you need it.

Resolution matters less than the sensor

The purpose of a dash cam is usually to read a number plate. That depends more on the sensor's low-light performance and the lens than on pixel count, because most incidents you care about happen in poor light — dusk, rain, night, a badly lit junction.

Practical guidance: 1440p is the sweet spot for most buyers. 1080p is adequate and produces smaller files. 4K sounds better and produces very large files that fill cards faster, and on a cheap sensor delivers little real benefit over 1440p.

What to look for instead:

  • A well-regarded sensor — Sony STARVIS and STARVIS 2 sensors are the common benchmark in this category for low light.
  • HDR or WDR, which handles the high-contrast situations dash cams constantly face: emerging from a tunnel, oncoming headlights, bright sky above a dark road.
  • Aperture, where a lower f-number gathers more light.
  • Frame rate. 30fps is fine; 60fps gives cleaner stills from moving footage, which is exactly what you extract a plate from.

Field of view is worth a thought too. Around 140 to 160 degrees captures adjacent lanes without much distortion. Much wider stretches the edges and can make a plate at the periphery unreadable — the opposite of the intent.

Parking mode is where the real decisions are

Parking mode is the most valuable feature and the one with genuine consequences, because it requires the camera to draw power while the engine is off.

The modes differ:

  • Impact detection — the camera sleeps and wakes on a jolt from the G-sensor. Lowest power draw, but it misses the seconds before impact and will not capture someone keying the car.
  • Motion detection — records when something moves in frame. Catches more, uses more power, and generates a lot of footage on a busy street.
  • Time-lapse — continuous low-frame-rate recording. Good coverage, moderate power draw.
  • Buffered parking mode — the best of these, keeping a rolling few seconds so you capture the moments before an impact, which is often what establishes fault.

Powering it without killing your battery

This is the part people get wrong. Two approaches:

A hardwire kit connects to the fuse box and includes low-voltage cut-off, which stops drawing power when the battery falls below a set threshold. That cut-off is essential — without it, a dash cam will flatten a car battery over a long weekend. Modern cars with start-stop systems and sensitive battery management are particularly unforgiving here, and on some vehicles hardwiring can interact with battery monitoring, so it is worth checking your model.

A dedicated battery pack charges while you drive and runs the camera when parked, leaving the car's battery untouched. It costs more and is the safer answer for anyone who parks for days at a time or drives a car with a small or aging battery.

Note also that a car left in direct summer sun gets hot enough to shut down a camera that uses a lithium battery. In hot climates, prefer a model with a supercapacitor rather than a battery — they tolerate heat far better and are the more reliable choice for a device that lives on a windscreen.

Storage is the most common silent failure

A dash cam writes continuously, overwriting the oldest footage in a loop. That is an unusually punishing workload, and an ordinary consumer memory card will wear out and fail — often without any obvious sign until you go looking for footage that does not exist.

Two rules:

Use a high-endurance card designed for continuous video recording. They are sold specifically for dash cams and security cameras and cost a little more than standard cards. Check the camera's maximum supported capacity before buying a large one.

Check the footage monthly. Genuinely — pull the card or open the app and confirm recent files play. Then format the card in the camera every few months, which both clears accumulated errors and is the maintenance step almost everyone skips. Many cameras will warn you about card health; do not ignore it.

Work out your realistic loop length too. Higher resolution and a second channel fill a card much faster, and a card that loops every ninety minutes may overwrite an incident before you get home and think to save it. Learn where your camera's manual lock button is — it protects the current clip from being overwritten, and pressing it at the roadside is the difference between having footage and not.

One channel, two, or three

A front-only camera covers the most common claim. A rear channel is the most valuable addition, because being hit from behind is frequent and the footage establishes it immediately. A cabin-facing third channel matters mainly for rideshare and delivery drivers.

Installing a rear camera means running a cable the length of the car, usually tucked under trim. It is a straightforward afternoon job on most vehicles and the single biggest coverage upgrade available.

Features that are useful and features that are noise

Useful: GPS, which stamps speed and location onto footage and is genuinely persuasive evidence; Wi-Fi, so you can pull a clip to your phone at the scene rather than removing a card; and a capacitor over a battery, as above.

Less useful than advertised: driver-assistance warnings such as lane departure and forward collision alerts, which in most dash cams are crude and quickly become noise you learn to ignore; and cloud connectivity, which is worth it only if you specifically want remote alerts and are willing to pay a subscription.

The legal points to check

Two things vary by jurisdiction and are worth confirming before you install.

Windscreen mounting rules. Some places restrict where a device may be placed so it does not obstruct the driver's view. Behind the rear-view mirror is generally the safest position and also keeps the camera in the wiper sweep.

Audio recording consent. Recording conversations inside the car is governed by wiretapping and consent laws that differ significantly between jurisdictions — some require all parties to consent. Most cameras let you disable audio, and for a cabin-facing camera in a rideshare vehicle, notifying passengers is both sensible and often required.

Also worth knowing: footage can help or hurt you. It is evidence of what happened, including your own speed and behaviour. That is an argument for driving as though it is recording, which it is.
