How a solar cover actually heats a pool
Most people assume a solar cover works by capturing sunlight, and it does — but that is the smaller half of the effect. The dominant mechanism is stopping evaporation. Evaporation is by far the largest route by which a pool loses heat, because turning water into vapour consumes a great deal of energy, and that energy comes out of the pool. A cover that floats on the surface interrupts it.
The consequence is a useful rule of thumb: a solar cover does more to retain heat overnight than to add heat during the day. Leaving it on at night, when the air is cool and evaporation is fastest, delivers most of the benefit. It also substantially reduces water loss and, because evaporating water leaves chemicals behind while UV destroys chlorine, cuts both top-up water and chemical consumption.
The formats, and what each is for
- Bubble covers — the familiar sheet with air pockets, floated bubble-side down against the water. The default choice: best combination of heat gain, evaporation control and price.
- Solar rings or discs — individual floating panels covering perhaps three-quarters of the surface. Far easier to handle without a reel, and correspondingly less effective.
- Liquid solar covers — a microscopically thin monolayer that reduces evaporation invisibly. Convenient for awkward shapes and where a sheet is impractical, with a modest effect that is disrupted by wind and heavy swimming.
- Insulated thermal blankets — thicker closed-cell foam, better at retaining heat and poorer at transmitting sunlight. Suited to cool climates and heated pools.
Thickness is the specification that decides lifespan
Bubble covers are sold by thickness in mil (thousandths of an inch), commonly 8, 12 and 16. Thicker material costs more, is heavier to handle, and lasts considerably longer because the failure mode is UV degradation and mechanical wear on the bubbles rather than anything else.
An 8 mil cover is the budget option and the shortest-lived. A 12 mil is the usual sensible middle. A 16 mil lasts longest and is genuinely heavy to drag off a large pool without a reel. Because cost per season matters more than sticker price, the thicker covers frequently work out cheaper over time — provided you have a practical way to handle them.
Colour, and a persistent myth
Clear and light blue covers transmit more light to the water and generally produce slightly better heat gain than dark ones, which absorb more heat in the cover material itself. Marketing claims about dramatic differences between colours overstate a small effect. Silver or reflective backing is aimed at retaining heat rather than gaining it. Do not choose primarily on colour.
Sizing, trimming and handling
Buy a cover slightly larger than the pool and trim it to shape. Covers are cut easily with household scissors, and the usual approach is to float it in place, let it settle for a day in the sun, then trim leaving a small overlap at the edges. Cut a little conservatively — you can always remove more.
A reel is the accessory that determines whether you actually use the cover. Rolling a wet 12 or 16 mil sheet off a full-size pool by hand is a two-person job that people stop doing by mid-season, at which point the cover delivers nothing. If the pool is larger than a small plunge pool, budget for the reel at the same time.
Getting a full life out of it
The things that destroy solar covers are avoidable. Do not leave the cover on while shock-dosing or immediately after adding concentrated chemicals, since high chlorine concentration under a sealed surface attacks the plastic quickly — a very common cause of premature failure. Do not leave it rolled on the reel in direct sun for long periods without a protective reel cover, since the exposed outer layer bakes. Rinse it occasionally, keep it out of contact with hot decking, and store it clean, dry and shaded over winter rather than folded wet.
What it is not
This is the safety point, and it is important. A solar cover is not a safety cover. It will not support weight, and because it looks like a solid surface while being neither buoyant enough nor strong enough to hold a person, a child or pet who gets onto or under it is in serious danger. Solar covers should be removed fully before swimming, and a household with young children or pets needs a proper certified safety cover, fencing or alarm as the actual safety measure. Never treat the two as interchangeable.
Also expect some maintenance friction: a cover keeps debris out but traps some at the edges, and pools with heavy leaf fall may still need a separate leaf net. Performance claims for heat gain depend on climate, sun hours and pool size, so treat published figures as indicative.
