A tent's stated capacity describes how many sleeping mats fit side by side with essentially no space for anything else. It is a packing measurement, not a comfort one.
The working rule is to size up by one for comfort: two people are comfortable in a three-person tent, with room for packs and boots. For car camping where weight does not matter, sizing up by two is common and pleasant.
Check the floor dimensions rather than trusting the number, particularly if anyone is tall — many tents are around 210cm long internally, which is tight for someone over six feet once a sleeping bag and pillow are involved.
Waterproofing is measured as hydrostatic head in millimetres. Around 1,500mm is generally considered the threshold for a waterproof flysheet; 3,000mm and above handles sustained heavy rain and wind-driven water.
The groundsheet matters more than the fly, because you kneel and lie on it and pressure forces water through. Look for a higher rating on the floor than the flysheet.
Two construction details do more than the number: taped seams, which prevent leaks at every stitch line, and a bathtub floor where the groundsheet curves up the sides before meeting the wall, keeping the seam off wet ground.
Most reports of a tent "leaking" are condensation. Occupants exhale a surprising amount of moisture overnight, and it condenses on the cold inner face of the fly.
A double-wall tent — a breathable inner with a separate waterproof fly — manages this properly: moisture passes through the inner and condenses on the fly, away from you. Single-wall tents are lighter and far more prone to dripping.
Ventilation is the other half. Look for vents high on the fly and the ability to open them in rain. Pitching with a small gap at the base helps considerably.
Three-season tents cover spring through autumn and are what most people need — good ventilation, rain protection, not built for snow loading.
Four-season tents have stronger poles, less mesh and steeper walls to shed snow. They are heavier and hotter in summer, and buying one for general camping is usually a mistake.
Poles decide how a tent behaves in wind. Aluminium poles flex and recover; fibreglass is cheaper and splinters, usually at the worst moment. For anything beyond a summer festival, aluminium is worth insisting on.
More pole crossings generally means a more stable structure. Check how many guy points there are too — an unguyed tent performs far below its rating.
Car camping: weight is almost irrelevant. Buy for space, headroom and a decent porch.
Backpacking: weight is the dominant factor, and it is where the money goes. Note the difference between packed weight, which includes everything in the bag, and trail or minimum weight, which counts only the essentials. Manufacturers quote whichever flatters.
A porch or vestibule is worth its weight — somewhere to leave wet boots and cook in bad weather makes a real difference to how liveable a tent is.
Pitch it once in the garden. Finding a missing pole or an unfamiliar pitching sequence in the dark and rain is the classic first-trip experience, and twenty minutes on a dry afternoon prevents it.
Check whether a footprint is included or extra — it protects the groundsheet and extends the tent's life considerably.
And always dry a tent fully before storing. Packing away damp is the single most common way tents are destroyed: mildew degrades coatings permanently and the smell never leaves.
