The subscription is the real price
Security cameras are sold on hardware price and paid for on subscription. On most major systems, without a plan you get a live view and a motion notification — and no recorded video to look at afterwards, which is the entire reason most people buy a camera.
Before comparing hardware, work out the five-year cost: the cameras, plus the monthly plan, multiplied by sixty. A cheap camera on a per-camera monthly plan can cost several times a more expensive camera on a plan that covers unlimited devices. Check specifically whether the plan is per camera or per household, because that single detail dominates the total for anyone installing more than two.
What a plan typically unlocks: recorded video history and how many days of it, person and package detection, activity zones, and rich notifications with a thumbnail. Decide which of those you actually need before paying for a tier that includes all of them.
Local storage versus cloud
Cloud recording survives someone stealing the camera, which is a genuine advantage, and it requires a subscription and an internet connection.
Local storage — a microSD card in the camera, or a hub with a drive — has no monthly fee and keeps footage in your house. The trade-offs are that a thief taking the camera takes the evidence, and that remote access still depends on the manufacturer's servers.
Some systems do both, which is the most resilient arrangement. If avoiding subscriptions is your priority, verify exactly which features still work without a plan rather than assuming local storage means full functionality.
Power decides where cameras can go
- Battery cameras mount anywhere and need recharging every few months, depending on how much traffic they see. A camera pointed at a busy pavement records constantly and drains fast.
- Plug-in cameras never need charging and are limited by the reach of an outdoor socket.
- Hardwired or PoE cameras are the most reliable and need running cable, which for most homes means an electrician.
- Solar panels keep battery cameras topped up and work well in genuinely sunny positions. In a north-facing corner under an eave, they will not.
A practical note on battery cameras: the published battery life assumes moderate activity. A camera covering a driveway on a busy street can need charging monthly, which people find out after installing it at height.
Specifications that matter, and one that mostly does not
Resolution is the headline and the least important of these. Beyond about 2K, what limits whether you can identify a face is usually lighting and distance, not pixels. A well-lit 1080p camera at four metres beats a 4K camera at twenty in darkness.
Night vision is what actually matters, since most incidents happen in darkness. Infrared gives monochrome images; colour night vision needs either a very sensitive sensor or a built-in spotlight. Cameras with a spotlight produce far more useful footage, at the cost of announcing themselves.
Field of view around 130 to 160 degrees covers a typical approach without excessive distortion. Wider looks impressive and stretches faces at the edges.
Detection quality is the difference between a useful camera and one you mute. Person, vehicle and animal detection, plus activity zones that ignore a pavement or a tree, determine whether you get three meaningful alerts a day or ninety useless ones. This is where the better systems genuinely separate themselves.
Finally, check the weather rating for outdoor units and the stated operating temperature range, which matters in cold climates where battery performance falls.
Privacy is a specification too
These devices record your home and, depending on placement, your neighbours. A few things are worth checking before choosing a brand.
Look for end-to-end encryption and whether it is available on the specific model you are buying, since support is often partial across a range. Read what the company says about employee access to footage, and about law-enforcement requests and whether it will notify you. Several manufacturers in this category have had documented incidents involving access to customer video or unclear data practices, so a company's track record and its current published policy are both relevant.
On placement: aim cameras at your own property. Recording a neighbour's garden or a shared entrance can create legal obligations that differ by jurisdiction, and audio recording is more tightly regulated than video in many places — most cameras allow audio to be disabled.
Installation and what breaks
Most consumer cameras are genuinely DIY — a bracket, a few screws, and a phone app. Doorbell cameras replacing a wired bell need existing wiring and a compatible transformer; battery doorbells avoid that entirely.
The common failure points are worth knowing: Wi-Fi that does not reach the far corner of a property, where a mesh node usually solves it; batteries in cold weather; and spiders and insects attracted to infrared lights, which trigger motion alerts all night. Positioning a camera under an eave rather than in open sky reduces both weather exposure and false alerts.
