Editorially scored by our research team.
Every score out of 10 is assigned by our editors from published pricing, features, fees, coverage and support terms — not from user-submitted reviews. Scores are our own opinion and change as products change. Read our full methodology.
HelloFresh is our top-scoring pick in Meal Kits, at 9.6/10 — it highlights “Very large weekly recipe selection”.
Blue Apron scores 9.1 and is the one to compare against it — it highlights “Long-established meal kit brand”.
Both scores are our editors’ assessment of published specifications, pricing and terms against the criteria in our rating methodology — they are not aggregated customer reviews.
Advertised pricing is close to meaningless without three adjustments, and doing this before signing up prevents most complaints about the category.
The headline figure is nearly always a first-box promotional price, often discounted across several boxes. Find the standard rate — usually further down the page or in the FAQ — because that is what you pay from week three.
Then add shipping, which is frequently quoted separately and can be significant on a small box. And note that premium recipes carry surcharges: steak, seafood and speciality dishes are commonly marked up per serving, so a menu chosen entirely from the appealing options costs noticeably more than the base rate.
Then compare honestly against the real alternative, which for most households is a supermarket shop rather than takeaway. Meal kits generally cost more per meal than cooking the same dish from scratch and less than ordering in. The value is reduced decision-making and less food waste from unused half-packets, not beating grocery prices.
Meal kits send pre-portioned raw ingredients and a recipe card. You still cook, typically twenty to forty minutes. If you buy one expecting to save time, you will be disappointed — the time saved is planning and shopping, not cooking.
Prepared meals arrive fully cooked and need only reheating. More expensive per serving and the only format that genuinely saves weeknight time.
Be honest about which problem you have before choosing.
Almost all of these are auto-renewing subscriptions, and that is where dissatisfaction concentrates. Before signing up, find four things:
Set a recurring calendar reminder a day before your skip deadline. It is the single most effective habit for using these services without waste.
Menu filters for vegetarian, low-carb, calorie-controlled or high-protein plans work reasonably well. Allergens need more care: most services prepare and pack in shared facilities and state that they cannot guarantee against cross-contact. A filter that hides recipes containing nuts is not the same as a nut-free product.
If someone in the household has a serious allergy, read the allergen statement itself rather than relying on menu tags, and treat these services cautiously.
Boxes arrive insulated with ice packs and are designed to sit for some hours. The practical questions are whether you can receive deliveries on your assigned day, whether the box can be left safely, and what the policy is when something arrives warm or damaged. Reputable services credit or replace promptly with a photograph — check the reporting window is not very short.
Packaging volume is a fair objection to the whole category. If it matters to you, check for recyclable liners and take-back schemes specifically rather than general environmental language.
Order the smallest viable box, choose recipes reflecting what you would genuinely cook on a normal week rather than the most exciting options, and note honestly how long each meal actually took against the stated time. Two or three weeks tells you whether it fits your routine; the discounted first box tells you very little.
Pricing, surcharges, skip deadlines and delivery areas vary by provider and change often. Confirm current terms and the standard post-promotional price before subscribing.
