Projector brightness is quoted in lumens, and the figure is the most manipulated specification in the category. Look specifically for ANSI lumens, which is a standardised measurement. Figures quoted as "LED lumens", "light source lumens" or simply "lumens" with a suspiciously large number are not comparable and are frequently several times optimistic.
How much you need depends almost entirely on light control. A fully darkened room needs far less than a living room with daylight. A rough guide: a dedicated dark room is comfortable at modest ANSI figures, while a room with ambient light needs considerably more — and no projector competes with direct sunlight on the screen.
If you cannot control light, an ambient-light-rejecting screen does more than buying a brighter projector.
This is the specification that most often makes a projector unusable in a particular room, and it is easy to check in advance.
Standard throw projectors need several metres to produce a large image, usually ceiling-mounted or placed behind the seating.
Short throw works from a metre or two.
Ultra short throw sits directly beneath the screen, inches from the wall, and is what makes a projector viable in a room where you cannot mount anything.
Every manufacturer publishes a throw ratio or a distance calculator. Measure your room, decide your screen size, and check the projector can produce it from where it will actually sit — before buying rather than after.
Many affordable projectors advertise 4K while using pixel shifting — a 1080p panel rapidly shifting to produce a higher perceived resolution. The result genuinely looks sharper than 1080p and is not native 4K, and manufacturers rarely make the distinction prominent.
Be more sceptical of very cheap projectors claiming 4K: some accept a 4K signal and display it at a much lower native resolution, which is a different claim entirely. Look for the native panel resolution in the specification.
Lamp projectors are cheapest to buy and dim over time, with replacement bulbs costing a meaningful fraction of the projector and rated in the low thousands of hours.
LED lasts far longer with no replacement, is generally dimmer, and produces good colour.
Laser is brightest and longest-lived — commonly rated around 20,000 hours or more — starts instantly, and costs most upfront.
Over a projector's life, a laser unit with no consumables often works out cheaper than a lamp model needing two or three bulbs. Calculate it rather than comparing sticker prices.
DLP is sharp and compact, and a minority of viewers perceive a brief "rainbow" artefact on high-contrast scenes. 3LCD avoids that entirely and typically produces higher colour brightness, in a larger body. LCoS offers the best contrast and black levels at premium prices.
If you are sensitive to rainbow artefacts — and you will know if you are — 3LCD avoids the issue entirely.
Contrast affects perceived image quality more than resolution in a dark room, and quoted dynamic contrast figures are largely marketing.
Noise. Projectors have cooling fans and sit near you. A loud projector is a permanent irritation; check the quoted decibel figure in eco mode.
Input lag matters for gaming; look for a low-latency mode.
Keystone and lens shift. Digital keystone correction fixes a skewed image by discarding pixels, which softens it. Optical lens shift moves the image without that loss and is far better if available.
Built-in speakers and streaming are convenient and rarely good. Plan for external audio, and check there is an audio output or eARC if you will use a soundbar.
Specifications, lamp life and throw ratios vary by model. Confirm the native resolution, ANSI brightness and throw distance against your own room before purchase.
