Buying a filter before knowing what you are filtering is the usual mistake. Different technologies remove different things, and no consumer filter removes everything.
In the US, your utility publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report listing what has been detected and at what levels — it is free and specific to your supply. If you are on a private well, or you want results for your own tap rather than the network, a certified laboratory test is the only reliable answer. Home test strips give a rough indication at best.
Common concerns fall into groups: chlorine and taste compounds, lead from old plumbing, PFAS, nitrates, hardness minerals, and microbiological contamination. Very few products address all of them.
Marketing language in this category is loose. What matters is independent certification against a named standard, and which contaminants the certification actually covers.
Look for NSF/ANSI certification and read the specific claim: 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odour; 53 covers health-related contaminants including lead and certain cysts; 58 covers reverse osmosis systems; 401 covers emerging compounds including some pharmaceuticals.
A product "tested to NSF standards" is not the same as certified, and certification for chlorine taste says nothing about lead. Check the certified claim against the contaminant you care about.
Pitchers and dispensers are cheapest and simplest, and slowest. Good for taste and basic reduction; capacity and flow make them tedious for a household of four.
Tap-mounted filters give filtered water on demand at the sink with a switch for unfiltered. They fit most standard taps and not pull-out sprayers.
Under-sink systems deliver higher flow through a dedicated tap and hold more filter media, so cartridges last longer. They need plumbing work and cupboard space.
Reverse osmosis removes the broadest range of contaminants including dissolved solids. The trade-offs are genuine: it wastes water to drain, it is slow and needs a storage tank, and it strips beneficial minerals, which is why many systems add a remineralisation stage.
Gravity systems need no plumbing or power, which makes them useful for emergencies and off-grid use.
Whole-house filters treat everything entering the property — good for sediment and chlorine, rarely sufficient on their own for drinking-water contaminants.
Filter cartridges are the real expense. Before buying, find the replacement price, the stated life in gallons or months, and whether the cartridges are proprietary.
Then calculate three years of cartridges and add it to the hardware. That number frequently reverses the ranking between a cheap pitcher and an under-sink system, because pitcher filters are small and need changing often.
Note that stated filter life assumes average water quality. Sediment-heavy or very hard water shortens it considerably.
An overdue filter is worse than no filter. Spent activated carbon can harbour bacterial growth, and a saturated cartridge stops adsorbing and may release what it has collected.
Change on schedule rather than when the water tastes different — taste is the last thing to fail, not the first. Set a calendar reminder rather than relying on an indicator, since many indicators count water volume or days rather than measuring anything.
Sanitise pitcher reservoirs regularly, and flush a new cartridge as instructed before drinking from it.
Setting expectations matters as much as choosing a product, because several common assumptions are wrong.
Hardness. Most drinking-water filters do not soften water. Limescale in a kettle needs a water softener or a scale-specific system, which is a different appliance entirely.
Bacteria and viruses. Standard carbon filters are not designed to make unsafe water safe. If you are on a private supply or under a boil-water notice, you need a system specifically certified for microbiological reduction — a pitcher filter is not that.
Everything at once. No single consumer technology covers the full range. Carbon handles chlorine, taste and many organic compounds; ion exchange handles some metals; reverse osmosis covers the broadest range including dissolved solids. Matching technology to your actual test results is the whole exercise.
Also worth knowing: filtered water has no preservative. Keep it refrigerated, use it within a few days, and clean the vessel regularly.
Certification claims, filter life and replacement pricing vary by model and change over time. Check the specific certified contaminant list rather than general marketing claims, and test your own water before choosing a system.
