Three different technologies, sold under one name
Understanding which type you are looking at matters more than any feature comparison, because their limitations differ fundamentally.
- True wireless — a base station broadcasts a radio signal and the collar responds when the dog moves beyond a set radius. The boundary is therefore always a circle centred on the transmitter, and it cannot be reshaped. Quick to set up and portable.
- In-ground wired — a buried perimeter wire carries a signal the collar detects. Far more precise and shapeable around flowerbeds, drives and pools, and stable. Requires trenching or edging the wire in, and a break in the wire disables the system.
- GPS-based — the collar uses satellite positioning against a boundary you draw on a map. Flexible and suited to large or irregular land, but accuracy varies with satellite conditions and tree cover, and drift of several metres is normal, so it is unsuitable for tight boundaries near a road.
Where these systems struggle
Wireless systems are affected by terrain and metal. Slopes, dense tree cover, outbuildings, metal siding, vehicles, chain-link fencing and even large appliances near the transmitter can distort the field, producing a boundary that is not the neat circle in the diagram and that can shift in poor weather. Signal also passes through walls, so the base station's field may cross into rooms of your house, correcting a dog indoors unless placement is planned.
Two limits apply to every type. They contain your dog but present no barrier to anything coming in — other dogs, wildlife, or people, including children who may approach a dog with no physical separation. And a determined dog that accelerates through the correction zone learns it can leave, then faces a correction on the way back, which teaches exactly the wrong lesson. Systems with a run-through prevention or escape-alert feature address the second problem partially.
Training is the product; the hardware is the accessory
This is the part most buyers underestimate. A containment system works because the dog understands where the boundary is, and that understanding comes from a structured training process over two to four weeks — typically placing visible boundary flags, walking the perimeter on a lead, letting the dog hear the warning tone with no correction, and rewarding retreat, before gradually removing the flags. Skipping this and relying on correction to teach the line is both less effective and considerably harder on the animal.
Manufacturers publish these protocols; following them is not optional if you want a reliable result. Most reported failures are training failures rather than equipment failures.
Correction settings and welfare
Reputable systems offer multiple levels including tone-only and vibration modes, and the correct approach is to start at the lowest setting that produces a response — usually a mild reaction such as an ear twitch, not a yelp. Escalating to a high level because the dog ignores a low one is a sign the training foundation is missing.
Some dogs are poor candidates regardless of setting: very anxious or fearful dogs, dogs with a history of aggression that may become redirected, very young puppies below the manufacturer's stated minimum age and weight, elderly or unwell dogs, and dogs with a strong prey drive who will accept a correction to chase. Veterinary and behaviour bodies differ in their views on aversive containment, and several countries and jurisdictions restrict or prohibit electronic collars entirely — check local law and any HOA or tenancy rules before buying. If your dog falls into one of those categories, a physical fence, a secure run, long-line training or supervised outdoor time are the appropriate alternatives.
Practical specifications to check
- Coverage — quoted area assumes flat, open, obstruction-free ground and is best treated as an upper bound.
- Collar fit and dog size — contact points must reach the skin through the coat without being tight, and there is a stated minimum neck size and weight. A poorly fitted collar either does nothing or causes pressure sores, so check the fit daily and reposition the collar.
- Battery — rechargeable versus proprietary cells, runtime, and whether there is a low-battery alert. A flat collar is an open gate.
- Waterproofing — a rating that covers rain and swimming if you have water on the property.
- Multiple dogs — whether extra collars work on one base station and what each costs.
Finally, treat these systems as a management tool rather than containment you can walk away from. Dogs should not be left unattended for long periods relying on one, and it is worth keeping identification tags and a microchip current regardless.
